An aerial view of campus shows the range of architecture at Royal Holloway, from the Grade I listed
French-renaissance-style Founder's Building, to the contemporary Windsor and Emily Wilding Davison
Buildings.
Our Egham campus is relatively compact, you can walk from one side to the other in 15 minutes.
You can also see plenty of green spaces and woodlands which are managed carefully to encourage and
protect local wildlife, part of the University's Living Campus initiative.
Graduation
Graduation is an important tradition and the day itself serves as a wonderful memory for students and
supporters alike.
Here, graduates gather after their ceremonies for a department photo on the steps of the Founder's
Building and the throwing of mortarboards.
Graduates join an extensive network of alumni at the University, and are invited to a series of
events and get-togethers beyond their time on campus to stay in touch.
Boilerhouse Lecture Theatre
The Boilerhouse, once the generator of heat and power for the entire University, provides a versatile
space for lectures and workshops.
It is also used as a characterful performance space by the Department of Drama, Theatre and Dance.
Boilerhouse Seminar Room
Still with metal columns, exposed brick and a vaulted ceiling, the Boilerhouse's old 'Tank Room' has
been converted into a contemporary teaching space.
It is now a seminar space for up to 80 students with modern IT and collaboration facilities.
Library - First Floor
Our extensive library has more than 450,000 books and over 500,000 ebooks, as well as a vast array of
academic journals. In addition to this main collection, we have a number of rare and valuable items,
archival works, internal publications, and major subject databases.
The Library space offers a variety of study seats, with different zones for silent and collaborative
work.
Library - Mezzanine
As well as housing all of the resources you'll need, the Library offers lots of different seating
options for private or group work, many with the bonus of overlooking Founder's Building.
During your study, you will also be supported by the Library team, who can help you navigate your way
around our resources.
Founder's Reading Room
Historical and charming, the recently refurbished Founder's Reading Room, located on the first floor
of the Founder's Building, is an ideal alternative to the Library to work in peace and quiet.
The space is open 24 hours a day and provides 96 additional study spaces, nestled among shelves of
historical reference books.
Moore Auditorium
The Moore Auditorium is a modern lecture theatre which can comfortably sit 120 students.
The Moore Building was once the home to a botanical laboratory in the 1890s, but with its vibrant
yellow and green facade, it is now home to the School of Business and Management.
Shilling Auditorium
The Shilling Auditorium is a large 250-seat lecture or conference space.
The Shilling Building is one of the most recent additions to campus, opened in 2018, and it comprises
modern teaching spaces, collaborative working spaces, and computing and electronics laboratories. It
is home to the Department of Electronic Engineering.
Windsor Auditorium
The Windsor Auditorium is a 400-capacity state-of-the-art lecture theatre, the largest on campus.
The building is just off Founder's Square and has a light and airy foyer, offshooting to a series of
breakout spaces and seminar rooms. The Windsor Building Conference Centre was a finalist in the “Best
Auditorium” category in the 2019 CHS Awards.
Biological Sciences
The Biological Sciences laboratories, based in the Bourne Building, have cutting-edge equipment and
facilities for excellent first-hand training in scientific skills.
In and around the laboratories, you will find equipment for mass spectrometry, bioinformatics,
protein and gene sequencing, and top-class imaging facilities. The Bourne Building also houses
aquariums and an anatomy museum.
Business and Management - seating booths
Within the Moore building, you will find seating booths, used by students in the School of Business
and Management for group work and discussion.
You will also find a range of meeting room options off the spacious foyer.
Theatre
The Caryl Churchill Theatre provides a flexible, well-lit and well-equipped space for lectures,
seminars and practical study, as well as extra-curricular performances and other events.
Naturally popular with drama students, the theatre is equipped with the latest audio-visual and
lighting equipment, managed by our own in-house team of technicians, offering versatility for both
education and performance.
Computer Science
Located in the Bedford Building, our Computer Science laboratory is a large versatile space for
students looking to develop the skills they need to solve complex problems.
Created in 1968, Royal Holloway's is one of oldest computer science departments in the world.
Fabrication Lab
The Fabrication Lab, found in the Shilling Building, is a state-of-the art facility used by our
Electronic Engineering students to develop and test practical projects.
As a whole, the Shilling Building is technology-led and designed to inspire students and staff to
develop a creative approach to study, learning and research.
Shilling Rooftop
The roof-top field laboratory with photovoltaic panels and a wind turbine facilitates experiments for
Electronic Engineering students relating to renewable energy.
From the Shilling rooftop, you can also see the skyline of central London in the distance.
Geography - Palaeoecology lab
Our Palaeoecology Lab enables students to take a closer look at plant and animal specimens.
It also houses important beetle, animal bone and stone tool reference collections along with smaller
collections of molluscs and plant macrofossils.

In the edit suites, students can work on Macs or PCs running Adobe applications and hone their skills
or work on projects. There's a big screen for playing back a video to the group.
Media Arts - TV studio
Our multi-purpose studio space is used for teaching and filming. Students have access to this space
outside of teaching hours to work on their own projects, as well as their assessed work.
The studio provides 70 square metres of filming space for students, and includes a lighting grid,
green screen capability, as well as various scenery flats and staging.
Dark Matter Lab
Our Dark Matter Lab affords students in the Department of Physics an opportunity to better understand
the nature of dark matter and its role in the evolution and structure of the universe.
Low Temperature Lab
Royal Holloway is home to the London Low Temperature Laboratory.
The facilities of LLTL include four microkelvin platforms, with distinctive sample environments, as
well as six dilution refrigerators and is supported by a helium liquefier.
Observatory
The Royal Holloway observatory provides a fantastic platform for Physics students to learn about
space and astronomy.
The observatory in the Tolansky Building houses a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. We're well away from
the light pollution of the big city, which allows our telescopes to provide the best observational
astronomy in the University of London.
Psychology - MRI scanner
Our Psychology department benefits from an on-site magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, used to
measure brain activity in experiments.
An adjacent viewing room enables small groups of students to learn about neuroscience simultaneously.
